Explora I: Luxury at sea is evolving and Explora Journeys is leading the shift

You may think you’re booking a cruise. You’re not. Explora Journeys calls it a journey for a reason.

Sailing aboard Explora I feels less like traditional cruising and more like checking into a magnificent floating boutique hotel that happens to move. One which is designed entirely around space, design, and quiet luxury.

There are no loud announcements. No forced programming. No over-the-top production energy. Instead, there’s space. Rhythm. Intention.

This is luxury that doesn’t try too hard. It’s calm, thoughtful, and beautifully executed.

I went in curious. I left genuinely impressed.

This wasn’t just sailing. It was research. Product evaluation. Relationship building. And yes, a birthday celebration layered in. But what stood out most were the quiet details most guests never notice.

If you’re considering Explora Journeys, here’s what actually matters.

The Restaurants: Where Explora Over-Delivers

The Emporium Marketplace (Dining Hall)

Chef-Driven. Not a Buffet.

It may look like a buffet at first glance, but it’s the farthest thing from it. Everything is chef-served. Handmade pastas. Fresh fish daily. Beautiful sushi. You order at each station and are handed a buzzer when your dish is ready.

Two insider details most guests miss:

• Full-size lobster tails appear nightly around 6:00 PM. Not samples. Not small portions. Real lobster tails and many guests don’t even realize they’re there. We would stop here before our dinner reservation for at least two per night.
• Oysters on the half shell are available daily and consistently replenished.

Champagne flows freely. Servers circulate. You never feel like you’re navigating a buffet line. It feels curated.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Fil Rouge (French Restaurant)

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner — something many guests overlook.

Breakfast and lunch here are quieter and more refined than the marketplace.

Insider move: order the signature Fil Rouge egg dish.
It arrives with a generous portion of caviar — not decorative, not symbolic — a real serving.

And for dinner, one detail worth noting:

They offer tableside Dover sole, deboned and finished in front of you. It’s a classic European service, executed beautifully.

This is the kind of quiet sophistication that elevates the experience without shouting about it.

Sakura (Asian Restaurant)

One of the hardest reservations onboard.

Insider Tip:

• Open for lunch on port days (availability is much better).
• On sea days, you can often sit at the sushi bar even when dinner reservations are fully booked (sushi menu only..but excellent).

We enjoyed lunch here often. The rotating bento boxes and chef-curated sushi and sashimi platters are beautifully executed and pair effortlessly with sake, champagne, or a custom Asian-inspired cocktail.

Relaxed. Elevated. Consistent.

Marble & Co. Grill (Steakhouse Restaurant)

Marble & Co. is Explora’s European steakhouse — and it leans fully into tradition.

A vibrant celebration of classic steakhouse culture, elevated with French finesse.

Sustainably sourced meats are grilled before guests. There’s an in-house dry ager. A thoughtfully curated wine cellar. Soft lighting. Relaxed, attentive service.

Signature highlights include:

• Prime rib sourced from the Deux-Sèvres region of the Loire Valley, known for its exceptional marbling
• Crushed fingerling potatoes with Bordier butter and Calvisius Oscietra caviar

It’s refined, comfortable, and beautifully executed.

Personally, I lean toward seafood — but for guests who love a classic steakhouse experience, this will absolutely be a favorite.

Anthology (Tasting Menu)

Anthology delivers a true tasting-menu experience.

This is the only restaurant onboard with an upcharge (approximately $170 per person, with an optional wine pairing around $70 at the time of sailing).

Seven courses. Thoughtful pacing. Michelin-level execution.

You can watch the chefs working calmly behind glass — the quiet choreography of a serious kitchen.

Having spent my career in restaurants, I pay attention to kitchen energy. This one hums. Calm. Focused. Intentional.

I celebrated my birthday here, and it was worth every penny.

Bars: Cocktail-Driven and Distinct

There are 11 bars onboard, and none feel repetitive.

Indoor lounges, outdoor decks, poolside settings all with Intimate evening spaces with live entertainment and each with its own personality.

Explora leans into cocktail culture. Menus are creative yet balanced. Presentation matters.

The Malt Whisky Bar is worth visiting for the smoked Old Fashioned alone. A smoke-filled bubble rests atop the cocktail; when it pops, smoke releases in a dramatic but elegant moment.

There is also a beautifully executed coffee bar serving made-to-order espresso drinks and specialty coffees in endless variations. Think refined European café — not cruise ship convenience.

Pools & Outdoor Living: Space to Breathe

Explora I offers five pools, including stunning side-facing jacuzzi pools that glow at sunset.

What stood out most was the amount of space per guest. There are full sun areas, covered loungers, shaded retreats, ocean-facing daybeds, and quiet corners tucked throughout the decks. You never feel crowded.

During the day the atmosphere is calm and refined, but in the evening the pool transforms into something playful — floating movie nights with silent headphones, while hosts circulate with freshly popped popcorn and sweet treats as guests lounge or drift in the water. It’s lighthearted but still elevated.

The Spa: A True Reset

The spa is accessible to all guests daily. Treatments are additional, but the thermal area is included.

I opted for a three-day, 60-minute massage package offered onboard at a better value than pre-booking.

Thermal facilities include:

• Finnish sauna
• Himalayan salt room
• Tropical rain showers
• Turbo hot tub
• Outdoor ocean-view relaxation area
• Herbal waters and tea station
• Ceramic heated loungers designed for deep relaxation
• Ice feature for facial refresh

The ceramic heated loungers are especially memorable. After alternating heat and water, resting on those warm surfaces overlooking the ocean feels deeply restorative.

Intentional. Calm. Well designed.

Programming & Thoughtful Touches

Each sailing features a Luminary guest — a curated expert who adds depth to the journey.

On ours, it was Leo Rossi, longtime tour manager for Fleetwood Mac and The Beach Boys just to name a few.

He shared behind-the-scenes stories from decades on the road, personal photos, and insight into what it truly takes to manage artists at that level. It felt intimate, unscripted, and surprisingly thoughtful. In many ways, it felt more like a conversation than a presentation.

Chef’s Kitchen: A Culinary Experience at Sea

This is a one-of-a-kind experience inside a fully equipped, professional culinary space offering immersive cooking classes.

These sessions are intentionally small (typically 12–15 guests), making the experience feel intimate and hands-on. Over the course of several hours, guests work inside a beautifully designed kitchen with ocean views, learning techniques from a highly decorated chef.

Each class is themed, Spanish, French, regional Mediterranean, seafood-focused — often thoughtfully tied to the destinations on the itinerary. You don’t just observe; you prepare the dishes yourself, learn the techniques behind them, and then sit down to enjoy the meal with wine.

It’s immersive, elevated, and surprisingly personal the kind of experience that turns a sailing into something far more memorable.

Additional highlights:

• High tea daily at 4:00 PM
• Oysters and lobster tails nightly around 6:00 PM
• A curated onboard art gallery
• 24-hour room service
• A small casino (present, but not central)

Hospitality

Service consistently exceeded expectations. The hospitality felt warm, intuitive, and calm throughout the journey. Hosts remembered names, bartenders remembered preferences, and there was a clear sense of pride in the experience they were delivering — the kind of consistency that quietly elevates everything onboard.

One detail that stood out was the background of many of the hosts. On most luxury lines, even at the high end, crew members often come from other cruise lines. Here, many seemed to come from a true luxury hotel background, and you could feel the difference in the way they interacted with guests.

Takeaways

After experiencing it firsthand, it becomes clear that Explora Journeys isn’t just a cruise. Life onboard settles into a natural rhythm: high tea at 4 o’clock, oysters at 6 o’clock, unhurried dinners, and real space for guests to relax and enjoy the moment. There are no formal nights, no tuxedos or gowns required — just a relaxed sense of resort elegance that fits the overall atmosphere.

The experience feels calm, thoughtful, and intentionally designed. It’s less about programming and more about space, pace, and quiet luxury.
